Lifestyle at the Beach

Lifestyle at the Beach in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach
Thinking about what life is really like on the Alabama Gulf Coast? As a full-time local Realtor who spends every day in and out of condos, neighborhoods, and beach accesses in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, I get to see the everyday lifestyle up close—not just the vacation version.
On this page, you’ll get an honest look at what it feels like to live here: beach time, family fun, outdoor adventures, dining, shopping, and what day-to-day life looks like for people who call the beach home all year long.
As a long-time, full-time Realtor along the Alabama Gulf Coast, I spend my days in and out of neighborhoods, condos, back roads, and beach accesses from Gulf Shores to Orange Beach. I get a front-row seat to how people actually live here—not just how it looks in vacation photos.
Whether you’re planning a move, buying a second home, or just daydreaming about living at the beach “one day,” this page is meant to give you a real-world picture of what life feels like on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
What Everyday Life Feels Like Here
Life at the beach is a mix of everyday normal and “I can’t believe I live here.”
You still have school drop-offs, grocery runs, and work schedules—but your routes often include water views, palm trees, and the occasional detour by the beach just to catch a sunrise or sunset. Winters are mild compared to much of the country, and summers are busy and full of energy.
You’ll find:
-
Full-time residents who’ve put down roots and built careers here
-
Second-home owners and snowbirds who come for part of the year
-
Investors who blend vacation use with short-term rentals
All of them are drawn here for the same reason: a relaxed, coastal lifestyle that still gives you access to good schools, health care, shopping, and restaurants.

Beach Time: Sugar-White Sand as Your “Backyard”
The beach is the heart of our lifestyle here.
-
Soft, sugar-white sand and emerald water stretch along roughly 30+ miles of coastline.
-
There are multiple public beach access points in both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
-
Many condo communities and beach homes have private or semi-private beach access, which means you can avoid the busiest public areas when you live or stay there.
Locals build their routines around the water:
-
Morning walks on the beach before work
-
Kids playing in the surf after school in the warmer months
-
Sunset strolls or beach chairs in the evenings
-
Quick weekend getaways even if you live just 20–30 minutes inland
It’s not unusual to hear, “Let’s meet at the beach for a bit before dinner,” and actually mean it.
The Alabama Gulf Coast is very family-friendly and offers many things to do for all ages. Here are a few options....
Family Fun & Attractions
The Alabama Gulf Coast is very family-friendly. A lot of people move here because they want their kids and grandkids to have access to the beach and plenty of things to do off the sand.
A few standouts:
-
Waterville USA – Water slides, wave pool, amusement rides, and seasonal attractions that keep families busy on hot days.
-
Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo – A 25-acre zoo that moved to a larger, modern location in 2020, with animal encounters, events, and educational programs.
-
The Wharf in Orange Beach – A “mini city” with shops, restaurants, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheater for concerts, movie theater, and seasonal events.
Layer in mini-golf, arcades, trampoline parks, dolphin cruises, and seasonal festivals, and you’ve got plenty to do on those “we need to get out of the house” days.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature
Beyond the beach, this area is one of the most diverse coastal ecosystems in the country, and it shows in the outdoor options.
-
Gulf State Park
28+ miles of trails, freshwater lakes, beaches, and nine distinct ecosystems. You’ll see everything from dunes and marshes to longleaf pine forests. -
Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
A network of paved and natural trails connecting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach through woods, wetlands, and coastal habitats—perfect for biking, walking, and exploring. -
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
Protected dunes, maritime forests, and quiet stretches of coastline where you can hike, bird-watch, and get a feel for the coast in its natural state.
You can hike, bike, paddle, or just sit on a bench and watch the water. For a lot of people, this is one of the biggest quality-of-life differences compared to where they’re moving from.

While you'll find more beach goers near the public access points, the picture above is fairly typical for most of our coast. For every condo community and beach house, part of their private property is the beach (up to the mean high tide line). So, if you're staying right on the beach as a visitor or owner, you won't feel too crowded.
Public Beach Access
Water Sports, Boating & “Play Days”
If you like being on or in the water, you will not run out of options:
-
Paddleboarding and kayaking on the back bays and lagoons
-
Jet skis, parasailing, and banana boat rides for the thrill-seekers
-
Inshore and offshore fishing trips
-
Sailing and sunset cruises
-
Boat rentals for DIY exploring
Many locals own a boat or at least have a friend who does. Orange Beach in particular has strong marina and deep-water boating access, while Gulf Shores offers quick access to the Gulf, Little Lagoon, and back bays.

Staying Active & Healthy
This is a very “get outside and move” kind of place.
You’ll find:
-
Gyms, fitness studios, and yoga options
-
Miles of sidewalks and multi-use paths
-
A bike-friendly culture—Gulf Shores has been recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community by national cycling organizations
-
Easy ways to combine exercise with fun: beach running, biking trails, paddling, or walking the Wharf or Gulf Place
Many people notice that when they move here, they naturally become more active simply because it’s easy and enjoyable to be outside most of the year.

The Alabama Gulf Coast has several championship golf courses to choose from for fun and challenge. Look at the map below for Craft Farms, Gulf Shores Golf Club, The Peninsula, and Kiva Dunes.
Golf Courses at the Beach

The Alabama Gulf Coast is one of the most diverse eco-systems in the country and there are plenty of places to explore nature in all its glory.
Gulf State Park
Gulf State Park is a true natural wonder where visitors and locals can take advantage of 28 miles of trails and 9 different ecosystems. Here's a little of what you can enjoy at Gulf State Park:

Whether you're into running on the beach, water sports, and sweating it out in the gym, our beach has plenty of opportunity to stay healthy and be active.
Side note: In June 2018, Gulf Shores was designated as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community (one of 2 cities in Alabama).
Health & Fitness Centers in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach

You don't have to look too far to find a great place to eat in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach....
Dining, Shopping & Nightlife
You don’t have to drive far for good food and entertainment.
-
Dining: From Gulf-front hangouts where you can eat with your toes in the sand to local brunch spots and seafood restaurants on the bays and canals, there’s something for everyone. Yelp and local guides will give you a rotating list of “top favorites,” but the common themes are fresh Gulf seafood, laid-back atmospheres, and plenty of outdoor seating.
-
Shopping: Tanger Outlets in Foley, The Wharf in Orange Beach, local boutiques, souvenir shops, and coastal décor stores give you a mix of national brands and local finds.
-
Nightlife: Places like The Hangout, Flora-Bama, and other beach bars and music venues offer live music, events, and late-night options when the sun goes down.
Some residents are out most weekends; others are more “fire pit on the back porch and early morning beach walk” types. The point is: you can build the lifestyle that fits you.

Living Here Full Time vs. Just Visiting
Vacationers see a beautiful, busy stretch of beach for a week or two. Full-time residents see the other layers:
-
Quieter “shoulder seasons” in spring and fall
-
Routine rhythms during the school year
-
Busy stretches during major events and summer tourism
-
Off-season days when you may have long stretches of beach almost to yourself
Cost of living depends on whether you’re on the island, near the water, or a bit inland in Baldwin County, but compared to many other U.S. beach destinations, a lot of buyers feel they get more for their money here—especially in single-family homes and non-Gulf-front condos.
If you’re still in research mode, you might also like my comparison post: Gulf Shores vs. Orange Beach and my pages for Gulf Shores real estate and Orange Beach real estate for a deeper dive into neighborhoods, price points, and market stats.

When the sun goes down and you're ready for some "big boy and girl" entertainment, there are plenty of places to have a drink and listen to some music.
Thinking About Making the Move?
If the idea of beach walks, bike trails, family-friendly attractions, and a slower coastal pace appeals to you, the next step is matching the lifestyle you want with the home or condo that makes sense for your budget.
I’ve helped buyers and sellers along this stretch of coast for about 20 years, and I’d be glad to talk through:
-
Whether a condo, single-family home, or townhome fits you best
-
Which areas make sense for schools, boating, or easy beach access
-
How second-home or investment ownership really works here
Frequently Asked Questions About Living at the Beach
It depends on whether you’re on the island or just off it. Gulf-front condos come with premium pricing, but inland homes in Foley, Gulf Shores north of the Intracoastal, and most of Orange Beach off Perdido Beach Blvd are surprisingly affordable. Baldwin County overall has a lower cost of living than many coastal markets.
Busy on weekends and holidays — especially near The Hangout, The Wharf, and major beach access points. Locals simply learn the back roads and timing (mornings and late afternoons are quieter). Fall, winter, and spring traffic is light.
Relaxed, friendly, outdoorsy. Most families spend their free time at the beach, biking Gulf State Park, boating the back bays, or exploring local restaurants. You’ll find a strong sense of community year-round.
The beach itself is tourist-heavy in summer, but neighborhoods, inland communities, and most restaurants feel very local. Fall, winter, and spring feel like “your” town again.
Yes — Baldwin County Schools continue to grow and improve, and many families choose Gulf Shores City Schools, Orange Beach schools, or nearby options in Foley and Daphne depending on lifestyle and commute preferences.
